Karl's Deer Blind

Sawyer Showcase:

It’s beginning to look a lot like hunting season in Karl’s deer blind

From this festive hunting stand to the interior of his cabin, this sawyer has used his HM126 to build up his woodland property.

In the forested hills of Manitoulin Island on Lake Huron, Karl sits in his comfy camper van seat in his deer blind.

Located in the depths of his leafy acreage, Karl observes the wildlife around him in the structure built from lumber milled on his Woodland Mills HM126 Portable Sawmill. Sitting in his seat, the hunter, builder and sawyer pointed to where he had just gotten a buck earlier this year.

“I just put the stand here last summer,” said Karl, noting it’s a popular grazing spot for deer, and after getting his first deer that fall, his son got another in the same place a week later.

A few members of the Woodland Mills team went out to meet Karl at his property and check out some of his creations made from his milled lumber, including the interior of his camp cabin, his outdoor shower, outhouse and various amenities around his property.

Karl, a longtime member of the Woodland Mills Product Owners and Community Facebook group, also runs his own milling business, God's Country Live Edge Wood Milling. On top of that, he also offers a sharpening service for fellow island sawyers using his Woodland Mills RS30 PRO Blade Sharpener.

When he heads home to the mainland, he’ll pick up the blades from sawmill owners on the way, sharpen them at home and drop them off when he returns to his camp.

From his deer blind, Karl shared how he made the hunting stand from spruce felled from his property, and it only took a couple days to set up. The lap-siding is also made with milled lumber, and its camoflage made from discarded Christmas trees.

“Stuff that was going to the landfill site, I made use out of it,” said Karl, elaborating that he bought some of the decorative trees off a few folks on Facebook Marketplace.

It’s convenient because he can pose the branches, and it helps to hide his hunting location from the nearby game.

“I’ve never seen any tree stands done with artificial Christmas tree branches but I’ll try anything once,” he said with a laugh.

This deer stand has been successful enough that he’s already planning another using the same design again near a popular deer trail.
