Engineers love to solve problems

Josh Malcom and Neil Bramley are no exception.

As ten-year-olds growing up in Ontario, Canada, Josh and Neil loved to solve mechanical problems together. Most importantly, how to make their homemade go-karts faster. In the years that followed, they both graduated with degrees in mechanical engineering, began their careers, and made homes for their families on rural properties. That's when they faced another engineering problem.

As landowners, they soon discovered that good quality forestry equipment was extremely expensive, and reasonably priced products weren't built with craftsmanship and durability. There was nothing available that offered both high quality and good value. So, in 2009, Josh and Neil sat down together and began to solve that problem.

The answer was Woodland Mills.

The quest for quality

From the beginning, the goal of Woodland Mills was to offer products with exceptional performance and construction, at a price that hobbyists could justify. Josh and Neil achieved that goal by combining innovative design, cost-effective manufacturing and selling directly to customers, eliminating unnecessary markups from middlemen.

The first product they tackled was a portable sawmill for acreage owners. They knew it would have to be tough enough to stand up to any challenge while offering the same cutting precision and quality as much more expensive mills. After many design iterations and extensive field testing, they created a prototype that offered the perfect balance of durability and value. Equipped with a heavy-duty frame and reliable Kohler engine, that prototype became Woodland Mills' flagship model — the HM126.

Expanding the lineup

After the successful launch of the HM126, the Woodland Mills team continued to expand and innovate. Knowing the needs of all sawyers are not equal, they broadened the sawmill series to include the HM130, with larger cutting capacity to tackle massive logs, and the HM122, ideal for the weekend warrior. Together, these three models have built a reputation as the highest quality, best valued sawmills in the industry.

In response to customer requests, Woodland Mills also created the Woodlander series of sawmill trailers, giving sawyers the opportunity to take their milling operations anywhere they chose to go while maintaining the same high-quality milling experience. The company continued innovating and expanding with a wide selection of forestry products, including wood chippers, stump grinders, ATV trailers, forestry winches and firewood processors.

Manufacturing excellence

Their next hurdle was to find a manufacturing partner who could consistently deliver superior quality at a cost that would enable them to offer products to at an unbeatable price. After a comprehensive assessment of potential suppliers, a manufacturer based in China was selected as the best source to meet Woodland Mills' high standards.

Woodland Mills' manufacturing partner was able to guarantee state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment, skilled management and workforce, advanced assembly processes and rigorous quality assurance. To ensure the highest level of quality control, every product is fully assembled in the plant for inspection before being partially disassembled for shipping.

Dedicated support

When they founded Woodland Mills, Josh and Neil identified one more key problem: many companies only seemed to care about their customers until the sale was complete. They resolved to make the quality of Woodland Mills' customer care and technical support every bit as good as the quality of their products.

The company now has more customer reviews from do-it-yourself landowners, woodworkers and hobbyists than any other manufacturer. These reviews are a testament to Woodland Mills' lasting commitment to quality and durability. Every employee in the Woodland Mills family, no matter what their role, is focused on making sure the entire customer experience — from research to purchase to setup and beyond — is seamlessly positive and supportive.

Woodland Mills has grown to become a global leader in well-constructed, affordable forestry equipment for do-it-yourself landowners across North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Asia and Africa. But Josh and Neil still own and operate the business, working closely with their team to create innovations that redefine the industry. From their base of operations in Ontario, Canada, they continue to craft accessible, affordable products that can be trusted to deliver lasting quality.
