Highway Homestead

Experience Exchange:

Cortney and Sam share the secrets of homesteading

On social media as Highway Homestead, this family talks about how their HM130MAX helps to build up their property.

Sam sits on the front porch of his family's log home, his wife joining him as she finishes making goat milk caramels to sell on their website and at the farmer's market.

The couple, who share their journey as Highway Homestead on social media, say they're always busy, and not posting online as much as they'd like, due to the amount of work it takes to care for five children and run their homestead.

They spoke with us about how they make money to keep their homestead running, including designing building plans for farmstead structures like chicken coops and feeders, that people can buy and use as a blueprint to make their own.

Homestead life can be tough but rewarding

Managing their property, raising their children, being an online business and content creators can be a challenging balance, says Cortney.

Thankfully they've had their Woodland Mills HM130MAX to help around their property. With it they've created their mobile chicken coop, the "chicken church" as they call it, as well as all the fenceposts around their property. Sam says just with fenceposts alone the mill paid for itself in the first few months.

The couple told us that while the homesteading life can be a struggle, and it's not really a money-making venture, it's an incredibly rewarding lifestyle that will leave something for their kids someday.

Thanks Cortney and Sam for sharing the secrets of your homestead.
