WIDE-CAPACITY FULLCUT™ SAWHEAD
The HM130MAX® is a wide capacity mobile sawmill for sawyers looking to create popular live edge slabs. It features our FULLCUT™ sawhead design, which matches a 30” (76 cm) diameter log capacity with a 30” (76 cm) throat opening, to produce stunning high-value live edge boards. Unbelievable cut accuracy and precision lets you cut veneers as thin as 1/16” (2 mm). You can also cut within 1” (25 mm) of the deck, ensuring you maximize your usable board foot output.
EFFICIENT POWER FOR BIGGER LOGS
A reliable 14 HP 4-cycle Kohler gas powered electric start engine powers the HM130MAX®. The engine features a slant cylinder design with a cast iron cylinder bore and overhead valve for easy access. The Quad-Clean 4-stage air filtration systems ensures only clean air enters the engine for maximum power and engine lifecycle. The industrial centrifugal clutch offers easy gas-and-go operation. An electric and recoil start option comes standard. A 12V battery is required for electric start and is not included with purchase.
HEAVY-DUTY 4-POST CARRIAGE ASSEMBLY
Our heavy-duty 4 post head design is reinforced with a back beam and welded top tubular crossbeam. The assembly is anchored between our precision laser-cut carriage side plates, to provide exceptional rigidity, and ensure smooth, accurate cuts.
PATENTED GAS AND GO AUTO LUBE SYSTEM
Every one of our sawmills features a gas and go auto lube system. This means the throttle handle engages the engine RPM, saw blade and patented auto lube system simultaneously. This system makes the process of cutting lumber quick and efficient and reduces the number of steps required by the operator.
ALUMINUM LUBRICANT TANK
Our sawmills are equipped with a weather-resistant aluminum lubricant tank, ensuring long-lasting performance in the most adverse conditions. The tank's needle valve allows precise control over the flow to the auto lube valve, enabling fine-tuning as needed.
CONSTANT-PRESSURE U-BUSHINGS
We’ve designed a unique constant-pressure U-bushing that facilitates a positive connection between the sawhead and the carriage posts while allowing the sawhead to move up and down smoothly. The U-bushings are constructed from glass-filled nylon, giving them a long service life.
RAPIDCHANGE® BLADE SYSTEM
The RapidChange® blade system is exclusive to Woodland Mills. RapidChange® is a tool-less approach for changing blades quickly that reduces the need for blade tracking adjustments between blade changes. Stacked Belleville washers act as a shock absorber for the blade while giving consistent blade tension in all temperatures, ensuring less stress on the blades.
DUAL RACE BEARING CARRIAGE WHEELS
The sawhead's carriage wheels have a dual race bearing. This provides the best connection between the rolling wheel and the track surface, to ensure stability from the wheels to the track to the sawhead. The radius profile in the groove and the square-topped tracks are designed to wear together to make a matched set over time. To keep the track free from debris, stainless steel wire sweepers clean the track while in use.
PRE-ASSEMBLED SAWHEAD
To reduce your assembly time, we carefully pre-assemble key components of the sawhead. Having the advantage of pre-assembled parts help you get up and running faster, saving you valuable time.
POWDER-COATED STEEL BLADE GUARDS
Our blade guards are built with durable, powder-coated metal for resilience and longevity. For added convenience during sawhead maintenance or blade changes, the guards are side hinged, allowing them to easily move out of the way and provide unobstructed access.
ADJUSTABLE THROTTLE CONFIGURATION
Our adjustable throttle assembly offers complete customization for individual needs. You can position both the throttle and push handle according to your preference based on track height, ensuring a comfortable operating experience.
EXPANDABLE TRACK SYSTEM
Our mills are designed to cut logs up to 10' 5" (3.1 m) long using the standard track configuration. You can unlock unlimited length potential by adding optional 6' 5" (1.95 m) track extensions. These extensions come with an extra log clamp assembly, log support, and required bunks, allowing you to customize the cutting length to your specific requirements.

Levelling jacks are provided so you can quickly level the trailer and tracks when deployed.
AUTO-LOCKING SAWHEAD
The auto-locking sawhead ensures precise and consistent control. Simply push the handle in and rotate through 16 locking locations to move the sawhead up or down. Coupled with an acme lead screw, you’ll get precise adjustments accurate to within 1/64”. Traditional magnetic log scale rulers are also included to line up precision cuts.
AUTO-LOCKING ADJUSTABLE BLADE GUIDE
The premium Auto-Locking Adjustable Blade Guide is constructed using stainless steel V-rollers and a matched machined aluminum arm to keep guides close to the wood being cut and reduce blade wander.
PRECISION MACHINED RIGID TRACK SYSTEM
The sawmill head rolls along a rigid 2.5″ x 4″ (63 mm x 101mm) machined L-channel, cross supported with heavy-duty 3″ x 6″ (76 mm x 152 mm) rectangular log bunks. These cross supports ensure the weight of the log is dispersed over a large bearing surface to avoid marking the log with indentations and provide additional rigidity to the track system. The track features two adjustable quick lock log clamps to securely hold the log while milling and consists of two 6’ 5” (1.95m) sections allowing for 10’ 4” (3.1m) log lengths. Additional 6’ 5” (1.95m) tracks can be attached to accommodate logs of any length. The track comes with 12 levelling legs with up to 4” (10 cm) of adjustment.
HIGH SPEED MACHINE BALANCED BANDWHEELS
Balanced using a high-speed machining process, our bandwheels ensure optimal consistency, minimizing vibrations and maximizing efficiency. Our bandwheels deliver cleaner, more accurate cuts with reduced blade deflection and increased durability.
THIN KERF BLADES
The HM130MAX® uses standard 1.25″ x 158″ x .042″ (32 mm x 4013 mm x 1 mm) Woodmaster hardened tipped blades, which are available through Woodland Mills. These blades maximize the greatest amount of lumber per log, with a blade kerf of just .080” (2 mm).

FAQs
It really comes down to the size of logs you plan on milling. Each of our sawmills is built to handle different log diameters, so it’s worth taking a look at your log pile, or the trees you expect to work with, before choosing a model.
While it might be tempting to just go for the biggest mill, we usually suggest a more practical approach: figure out the largest logs you’ll be milling, then choose a sawmill that can handle about 20% more. For example, if you’ve got 26" logs, the HM130MAX, which can handle up to 30", is probably the way to go. This will provide a little more wiggle room for positioning the log on the track and also allow you to mill some bigger logs in the future should they come your way.
You can always run smaller logs on a bigger mill, but trying to squeeze oversized logs onto a smaller mill? That’s a tougher game. Best to play it safe - you never know what might roll into your lot.
When it comes to picking the right sawmill, the two biggest things to think about are cutting capacity and engine size. The more horsepower you have, the faster you’ll get through your logs, but going with a smaller engine can save you some cash upfront and only affect cutting speed, not cutting capacity.
If you’re planning to work with smaller diameter logs and want to keep things budget-friendly, check out the HM122 or HM126. They’re two of our more compact models, but still pack plenty of capability for smaller-scale milling, and they might be all you need, depending on your projects.
So when looking for the best affordable sawmill, remember to balance the size of logs you want to mill and the amount of time you want to spend milling. Horsepower buys time, not cutting capacity.
As long as you’ve got trees, you’ve got lumber, and that’s the mantra of just about every sawyer out there. With a portable sawmill, people are doing everything from cutting live-edge slabs and building custom tables, to crafting benches, barns, and even off-grid cabins, complete with milled flooring, siding, and cabinetry.
Our customers have built some seriously impressive things. Check out our Facebook Community or Community Gallery to get inspired for your own next project. You might be surprised by what your mill can do.
If you're looking for the right accessories for your sawmill, we feature packages on each product page that include our customer's favourites. These are based on what our customers actually buying with their sawmills. They include the upgrades, accessories and replacement parts you need to get milling.
A blade sharpener is also something you may want to consider as it can extend the life of your blade and ensure you're never without a sharp blade. Blades can typically be sharpened up to 5 times, essentially turning 1 blade into 5 blades. This math often makes sense for most sawyers.
We’ve designed our sawmills to be simple to use and low on maintenance, so you can spend more time milling and less time wrenching. The engine is the part that needs the most attention, with regular oil changes and refueling. All of that is standard stuff and clearly outlined in the manual.
Beyond that, it’s pretty smooth sailing. As long as you keep up with basic checks, you’ll have no trouble keeping your mill running strong.
A portable sawmill is an upfront investment that pays off for years. Instead of buying pricey 2x4s or posts every time you start a new project, you can just cut your own lumber, right when and how you need it. That alone can save you a ton of money over time.
A lot of sawyers mill trees from their own property, which is pretty special when you know exactly where your wood came from. There’s also something satisfying about milling boards to the exact size you need, not just whatever’s on the shelf. Whether you’re building a shed, a deck, or something more custom, owning a mill gives you the freedom to do it your way.
A lot of our customers use their mills to bring in extra income, or even run full-time businesses. Some hit the road and offer mobile milling services, turning storm-damaged or backyard trees into usable lumber for customers. Others use their mills to create cool woodworking projects, like epoxy boards, benches, or live-edge tables, and sell them online or at local markets.
We've also seen sawyers turn into small-scale lumber suppliers, selling unique slabs and cuts you just won’t find at the local yard. We love seeing all the creative ways people use their mills to build something, whether it’s a project, a side hustle, or a business.
Your time is valuable, so unlike some other sawmills on the market that arrive in hundreds of pieces, we deliver our portable sawmills partially assembled to save you time. Most of the complicated parts - like our sawheads - are pre-assembled. We have also invested alot of time in creating easy-to-follow manuals to ensure the instructions don't leave you scratching your head. Simply follow the step-by-step instructions to finish assembling the carriage and track. Your manual is included in the black tube on the back of the blade guard and can also be viewed in PDF format here.
In terms of timing, if you’re working solo and comfortable with tools it will take about a day to finish, but extra hands will help speed up the process. If you're building your sawmill on our Woodlander trailer, it will take about two days total before you're ready to start milling.
