5 tools you can make to improve your next hunting or Fishing trip

For many sawyers, a portable sawmill is more than just a tool. It is a gateway to creativity, craftsmanship, and time spent in the great outdoors. Let’s celebrate the ingenuity of these 5 sawyers who have combined their love of woodworking with their passion for hunting and fishing, turning scrap wood and logs into functional, one-of-a-kind gear.

A Turkey Call; Hanging Up His Tools

When Adrian sold his 500th custom turkey call, he decided it was time to close his business. Over the years, he’s poured skill and passion into every piece, joking, “Maybe someday they’ll be as sought after as the Old Lynchs.” Among his many memorable customers, Adrian fondly recalls Larry Weishuhn, aka Mr. Whitetail, a respected wildlife biologist, author, and television personality.

As a final gesture before retiring, Adrian donated his last three turkey calls to the NWTF for a fundraiser. One of these special pieces was crafted from a spalted maple burl, a beautiful reminder of a career built on craftsmanship, dedication, and a love for the outdoors. Although Adrian is retired, his HM126 is not, and he is excited to work on his own projects in the future.

An Ice Fishing Stand; An inventive Solution

As winter approached, Gerry tucked his HM130MAX away and pulled out his ice fishing gear. This year he wanted a stand for his fishing rod to sit in while he waited for a bite but being a sawyer, he wanted to make it himself. He had a plan using some scrap walnut and cherry from the mill. The missing piece? Spring steel. Just like that it hit him and off to his sawmill supplies he went to grab an old blade that had been retired after joining the club. Before long, he had two beautiful pole holders made entirely from scrap materials from around his workshop. Gerry hopes this idea inspires others, just as the sawyer community has inspired him.

Custom Fish Cleaning Board; A thoughtful Gesture

This might look like an ordinary fish cleaning board, but this one’s got a story. When Karlos’ friend purchased a bait and tackle shop in Espanola, he wanted to mark the occasion with something special. After milling the perfect Manitoulin cedar cookie on his HM122, Karlos added a tail clip and  passed it over to his buddy Tom’s custom engraving shop for the final touches. The result? A fish cleaning board sporting the shop’s unforgettable name, “Fishy Fishy Bang Bang” that is too  beautiful to use for its intended purpose.

A Deer Stand; Realizing a Dream

For over 25 years, Brian dreamed of owning his own sawmill. Now, as the proud owner of an HM130MAX that dream has become reality. Since setting it up, he’s been milling and building non-stop, adding a heated house, two small deer stands, and a large deer stand to his property in Northwest Ontario. With many more projects planned for the lodge and campground, it looks like Brian’s milling journey is just getting started.

The GoBble Hut; Perfect use of cut-offs

Turkeys have exceptional eyesight, making them challenging to hunt. Even the slightest movement can send them running. That’s why concealment is essential for success. To gain the upper hand, Dana got to work building a cozy little turkey hut from leftover white oak cut-offs from her HM126. The natural bark helps it blend seamlessly into the surrounding forest, creating perfect camouflage. The “Gobble Hut”, as she lovingly named it, is a comfortable spot to hide on those chilly, damp early mornings while they wait for the perfect shot.

So, grab some scrap wood, fire up your portable sawmill, and see what you can create for your next hunting or fishing adventure. For more inspiring projects like these, check out our Facebook Community and join the conversation.
