Building an Off-Grid Homestead in Alaska

On a remote property in Vallenar Bay, Alaska, Joe is proving just how much can be accomplished with local timber, determination, and the right equipment.

Since purchasing his HM130MAX Portable Sawmill, Joe has been steadily developing his off-grid property while also taking on custom projects for clients he has met along the way. What started as a tool to help develop his own land has become an essential part of both his lifestyle and many opportunities.

From milling lumber for cabins, outbuildings, and homestead projects to creating custom pieces for others, Joe has embraced the ability to turn local timber into valuable, usable products. His HM130MAX Portable Sawmill has "allowed me to maximize the resources on my property while helping friends, neighbours, and clients bring their own ideas to life," states Joe.

Whether he's building for his family, improving his property, or crafting unique projects for customers, Joe continues to demonstrate what's possible when passion, hard work, and an HM130MAX Portable Sawmill come together.

Nearly every board used in these builds has come directly from his property. Spruce harvested on-site has been milled into flooring, wall boards, and roof decking, while live-edge red cedar has been used for finishing details such as fascia boards.

"The buildings taking shape across the property showcase what's possible when local timber is transformed into finished structures. Spruce milled on-site has been used throughout the construction process, including 5/4 flooring, 2/4 exterior wall boards, and 4/4 roof decking beneath the shingles. Aside from nails and fasteners, virtually every component of the buildings has come directly from the land itself." Joe explains.

Building a legacy for the next generation

Among the many projects Joe has completed and continues to work on, one stands out: a barn structure that will become a fishing and hunting cabin for his sons. Built from trees harvested and milled on the same property, it will become a place where future memories are made.

Getting there was half the challenge

"Much of the sawmill was transported to the property by skiff, making the journey by water before ever cutting its first board," Joe continues.

The same way that helped bring in the mill also plays a key role in sourcing timber. Joe regularly uses his boat to access logs and retrieve valuable cedar during high tide. For Joe, getting equipment and materials to the site is simply part of life off the grid. This also makes every completed project that much more rewarding.

Solar-powered sharpening!

Joe's off-grid setup extends beyond milling. He also relies on his RS30 Blade Sharpener and Tooth Setter, powered by a solar-charged battery system, to keep his blades in top condition. Being able to sharpen and set blades right on the property helps him stay productive and self-sufficient, no matter how remote the job site.

From transporting equipment by boat to milling thousands of board feet of spruce and cedar, this Alaskan property demonstrates the true potential of off-grid building. Every structure tells a story not just of craftsmanship, but of creating something lasting from the resources available right outside the door.
