Mita Shares the Plan for Turning Standing Dead Trees into Something New
She plans to convert a lot of the dead trees on her property into a studio for her family
With a world of trees around her, Mita says she doesn't need to look far for logs to harvest.
It's been a busy winter for her, using her Loglander 28 Log Arch to haul logs out of the forest to mill on her Woodland Mills HM126 Portable Sawmill.
After a season of harvesting she wants to make a new outbuilding on her Northern Ontario property that will be a music studio, a place for her wife's painting and a place to practice jiu-jitsu.
"I've already milled about 20-25 trees or so, prepping for this upcoming building year," she says.
The Plan for Harvesting Dead Wood
"About a year ago my family and I moved out to some beautiful acreage in Northern Ontario," says Mita.
Their new 50 acre property is surrounded by many acres of untended crown land, with lots of standing dead trees able to be harvested.
She also says there have been some devastating forest fires in the area recently, and it's inspired her to thin the wooded area around her home to make it less dangerous.
"That stuff, when it catches, is just like an inferno instantly," she says.
Thankfully there hasn't been much need to fell any trees, since there's been a lot of fresh trees which have been downed naturally over time.
"I haven't had to cut a live tree yet to mill green wood because there's still so much standing spruce that's there to be harvested," she says.
For pulling the logs out of the brush Mita purchased a Loglander 28 and hooked it up to her ATV for skidding them back to her sawmill.
"The Loglander has been awesome," she says. "It's that extra ease of transportation for these monstrous and heavy trees."
What to Do With All This Material?
So what is Mita planning to do with all these downed logs milled into lumber?
The landowner says she has enough lumber to do at least one and a half new outbuildings on her property, and she's planning to make something for her family's recreational activities.
It'll be a place for her wife to do some painting, and for her to write and record music. It's a perfect getaway, deep in the forest, for her family to gather together or spend time practicing their hobbies.
"We're pretty ambitious with our time, always on the go in this house," says Mita.
There's also a wood storage shed they're planning on building, all made from logs taken from the nearby land.
"We're kinda giving our land its signature," she adds.
