Choosing the right sawmill: From research to reality
Bruce has been researching portable band sawmills for several years now, carefully comparing different brands, models, and configurations to find the right fit for his needs. Initially, Bruce was set on ordering the HM126 Portable Sawmill as a stationary setup. It seemed like a solid, dependable option, and at the time, mobility did not seem like a major factor for him. However, the more research he did, the more he began to appreciate the advantages of having a portable system, especially when working across different areas of his property. That’s when the Woodlander XL trailer really caught Bruce's attention. It completely changed the perspective, offering flexibility to bring the mill directly to the logs rather than the other way around.
"As a metal fabricator by trade, I naturally pay close attention to design, structure, and build quality, says Bruce. It didn’t take long to recognize how well-engineered the Woodland Mills equipment is."
The trailer system in particular stood out to Bruce right away. Not just for its practicality, but for how thoroughly it was designed. He could tell that real-world use cases were considered at every stage of the build.
"That same level of attention to detail is clearly carried across their entire product line, which gave me a lot of confidence in the brand as a whole," Bruce explained.
Bruce went beyond sawmills
Bruce's experience with Woodland Mills didn’t stop at sawmills. After last year’s ice storm in Ontario, he was left with a significant amount of cleanup. He then began searching for a reliable woodchipper to handle the workload and once again began researching, comparing specs, pricing, and reviews across multiple manufacturers. At the end of his search, he found himself coming back to Woodland Mills and the WC88 Wood Chipper. It really felt like a no-brainer to Bruce.
“Not only did the machine check all the boxes in terms of performance and value, but the fact that it’s a Canadian company located just a few hours from me here in Ontario made the decision even easier," Bruce states. "On top of that, the reputation for strong customer service gave me added peace of mind.”
Educating through sawmilling
In addition to Bruce’s hands-on work, he is currently teaching Construction Technology at a local high school. He recently proposed developing a new course focused on milling and timber framing, which he believes will give students a unique, practical skill set and a deeper understanding of how materials are sourced and used. His goal is to eventually incorporate a Woodland Mills sawmill and trailer into the program, allowing students to learn directly on equipment that reflects real-world industry standards.
It’s inspiring to see how Woodland Mills equipment can spark interest and motivate the development of hands-on learning experiences for younger generations, helping pass down valuable skills in milling and craftsmanship.
the company that continues to stand out
Overall, Bruce has had a positive experience researching and interacting with Woodland Mills products. From thoughtful engineering and solid construction to the Canadian roots and customer support, it’s a company that continues to stand out for him and one he is looking forward to working with more in the future.
