How Woodland Mills Transformed Karl's Retirement

Retirement, for most people, is a time in life when you can slow down, relax, and enjoy the rewards of decades of hard work. For Karl, however, retirement became the beginning of an entirely new adventure, one fueled by creativity, entrepreneurship, and a passion for woodworking. With the help of Woodland Mills equipment, Karl transformed what started as a simple hobby into a thriving business and a fulfilling lifestyle that keeps him active and engaged every single day.

Turning Opportunity into Community

Like many retirees, Karl looked forward to having more time to pursue his interests. Living on a beautiful 100-acre property on Manitoulin Island, he was surrounded by natural resources and endless possibilities for projects. What he needed was the right equipment to help him make the most of those opportunities.

That opportunity arrived when Karl invested in a Woodland Mills HM126 Portable Sawmill. The sawmill allowed him to process logs from his property and turn them into usable lumber, slabs, and wood products. What initially began as a way to support personal projects soon sparked a deeper passion for milling and woodworking. As his skills developed, Karl realized they could benefit not only himself and his property but also the community around him.

Managing 100 acres more efficiently

For Karl, maintaining a 100-acre property means making the most of every resource available. One of the most important tasks is managing fallen trees, clearing areas for projects, and preparing firewood for heating and outdoor use. That's where the Woodland Mills Multilander Trailer became an important addition.

The Multilander Trailer allows Karl to transport wood and other heavy materials across his property safely and with ease. Having the Multilander Trailer means logs can be collected directly from different areas of the property, transported to a central location, cut and split, and then moved to storage with significantly less effort. This not only saves time but also reduces the physical strain associated with handling heavy timber.

Not only does Karl have an HM126 Portable Sawmill and a Multilander Trailer, but he has the RS8 Blade Sharpener and even more recently, the RS30 PRO Blade Sharpener. This equipment has really elevated his business.

“With my sharpening services, I have over 80 customers, and it's still growing!” explains Karl. “Especially now that I pick up and drop off blades on my way to and from camp on Manitoulin Island, my customers really love this service.”

Built from the ground up

One of the most rewarding aspects of owning a portable sawmill is the ability to transform raw logs into materials for meaningful projects. Karl put this capability to good use throughout his property.

A wooden hunting blind elevated on stilts in a forested area.

Using lumber milled from his own land, he constructed a variety of structures, including:

    • Additions to his off-grid cabin
    • Hunting stands
    • Tables
    • Custom woodworking projects, including hollow log lamps, charcuterie boards, axe-throwing games, and more!
  •

Each project carried a sense of accomplishment because the materials came directly from trees he milled himself. Rather than purchasing lumber from a store, Karl had complete control over the process from forest to finished project.

“Crazy what you can do with a Woodland Mills Sawmill!” Karl says.

Giving back through woodworking

An inspiring aspect of Karl's retirement journey is his commitment to giving back. Through his milling operation, he has donated wood rounds and materials to schools, community groups, and local events. He even keeps a stack of Woodland Mills Catalogson hand to share with others.

These contributions have helped support educational projects, outdoor activities, and community initiatives. Karl's willingness to share his resources demonstrates how woodworking can create positive impacts that extend far beyond business.

His work serves as a reminder that retirement can be a time not only for personal growth but also for community involvement and service.

the woodland mills difference

For Karl, Woodland Mills is more than a supplier of equipment. It provided him the tools that helped unlock a new lifestyle. The portability, reliability, and versatility of the HM126 Portable Sawmill gave him the ability to turn timber into opportunity, whether for personal projects, business ventures, or community contributions.

His story demonstrates how the right equipment can empower individuals to pursue their passions, learn new skills, and create lasting value long after retirement.

“Like I've said before, my next life, I'm working for Woodland Mills!” Karl jokes.
